James Bond's first 007 mission takes him to Madagascar, where he is to spy on a terrorist Mollaka. Not everything goes as planned and Bond decides to investigate, independently of the MI6 agency, in order to track down the rest of the terrorist cell. Following a lead to the Bahamas, he encounters Dimitrios and his girlfriend, Solange. He learns that Dimitrios is involved with Le Chiffre, banker to the world's terrorist organizations. Secret Service intelligence reveals that Le Chiffre is planning to raise money in a high-stakes poker game in Montenegro at Le Casino Royale. MI6 assigns 007 to play against him, knowing that if Le Chiffre loses, it will destroy his organization. 'M' places Bond under the watchful eye of the beguiling Vesper Lynd. At first skeptical of what value Vesper can provide, Bond's interest in her deepens as they brave danger together--and even torture at the hands of Le Chiffre. In Montenegro, Bond allies himself with Matthis, MI6's local field agent, and Felix Leiter, who is representing the interests of the CIA. IN THEATERS NOVEMBER 22, 2006After the success of 2004’s MAN ON FIRE, director Tony Scott and Denzel Washington teamed up once again--this time alongside high-powered producer Jerry Bruckheimer--to deliver this big-budget spectacle of an action picture set in post-Katrina New Orleans. The city is delivered another crushing blow when a ferry explodes, killing over 500 innocent citizens. Only this time, nature wasn’t the cause of the tragedy. Enter ATF officer Doug Carlin (Washington), who is recruited by a newly formed FBI unit (headed by Val Kilmer) to help track down the killer (a Timothy McVeigh-esque Jim Caviezel). When a body is found floating in the river, it is determined that the victim was murdered before the ferry blast occurred. Unfortunately, the victim was the impossibly beautiful Claire Kuchever (Paula Patton), whose death has begun to torment Carlin. Adding a new level to the investigation is a top-secret FBI invention, which allows a select group to view the past on screen as if it had been videotaped days earlier. The more Carlin sees of Kuchever, the more connected to her he becomes, until he decides to risk his life by traveling back in time and altering the course of history.Plausibility isn’t the number one reason to watch a Jerry Bruckheimer movie, and DÉJÀ VU is certainly no exception. This time around, however, Bruckheimer wisely recruited Scott and Washington to bring their expertise to the project. The result is another stylish and atmospheric drama/thriller/romance/action-adventure hybrid, which raises interesting questions as it entertains.

IN THEATERS DECEMBER 1, 2006The legacy of perpetual college party-man Van Wilder lives on in NATIONAL LAMPOON’S VAN WILDER 2: THE RISE OF TAJ, as his former apprentice Taj Mahal Badalandabad (Kal Penn) takes the torch to jolly old England, where he is continuing his education at stuffy Camford University. At first things look bleak for Taj, despite his gleaming newfound confidence and hip makeover from his days at Coolidge College, as he is rejected by the prestigious fraternity, Fox and Hounds, and ends up boarding with a group of misfits. Driven to live up to his former mentor’s good name and also to make his father proud, Taj sets out to prove his big-man-on-campus potential by unabashedly leading his outcast housemates in an attempt to defeat the wealthy elite of Camford in a range of competitions for the coveted Hastings Cup.Like its predecessor, the film is chockful of vulgar humor and sophomoric antics. Although Taj is the only character to appear from the first VAN WILDER (with the exception of Wilder’s pet bulldog), many of the plot points are predictably similar. Occasionally peeking through the excessive sexual references, outrageous gags, and cringe-worthy debauchery is a laugh-out-loud film that encourages the underdog and thumbs its nose at the establishment. Much like the grandfather of all college films, ANIMAL HOUSE (1978), VAN WILDER 2: THE RISE OF TAJ examines the lighter side of higher education, pointing out that its not only about earning a diploma but also about discovering one’s potential--and not forgetting to have fun along the way.

Not only is toy production behind schedule, but another special delivery is on its way--Scott's wife, Carol/Mrs. Claus (Elizabeth Mitchell) is pregnant. To add to the pressure, Carol’s parents are coming for a visit, prompting an emergency make-over for Santa’s Village (into a nondescript Canadian town) to protect Scott’s true identity. With all this on his mind, Santa is more than happy to let his fellow seasonal icon Jack Frost (Martin Short) step in and help out. But Frost has an ulterior motive: angry over his secondary-figure status and longing to have his own holiday, he tricks Santa into giving up his reign, and Christmas falls into the hands of Frost. Scott, no longer Santa Claus, must decide between resuming his previous life or saving Christmas from the coldhearted Frost.This film conveys the message that Christmas is about family and the human spirit--not commercialism. In addition to the holiday association, the film also encourages teamwork and problem solving through positive means, even when things look like they can’t get any worse. THE SANTA CLAUSE 3: THE ESCAPE CLAUSE is an entertaining holiday film, perfect for the whole family, and a fitting continuum of THE SANTA CLAUSE series.

One morning, a seemingly average and generally solitary IRS agent named Harold Crick begins to hear a female voice narrating his every action, thought and feeling in alarmingly precise detail. Harold's carefully controlled life is turned upside down by this narration only he can hear, and when the voice declares that Harold Crick is facing imminent death, he realizes he must find out who is writing his story and persuade her to change the ending. The voice in Harold's head turns out to be the once celebrated, but now nearly forgotten, novelist Karen "Kay" Eiffel, who is struggling to find an ending for what might be her best book. Her only remaining challenge is to figure out a way to kill her main character, but little does she know that Harold Crick is alive and well and inexplicably aware of her words and her plans for him. To make matters worse, Kay's publisher has dispatched a hard-nosed "assistant," Penny Escher, to force Kay to finish her novel and finish off Harold Crick. Desperate to take control of his destiny and avoid an untimely demise, Harold seeks help from a literary theorist named Jules Hilbert, who suggests that Harold might be able to change his fate by turning his story from a tragedy into a comedy. Professor Hilbert suggests that Harold try to follow one of comedy's most elemental formulas: a love story between two people who hate each other. His suggestion leads Harold to initiate an unlikely romance with a free-spirited baker named Ana Pascal. As Harold experiences true love and true life for the first time, he becomes convinced that he has escaped his fate, as his story seems to be taking on all the trappings of a comedy in which he will not, and cannot, die. But Harold is unaware that in a Karen Eiffel tragedy, the lead characters always die at exactly the moment when they have the most to live for.

IN THEATRES NOVEMBER 9, 2007Robert Redford directs and stars in this provocative ode to political activism. Boasting a powerhouse cast that also includes Meryl Streep and Tom Cruise, the film features three storylines centered around the Iraq war. Cruise is Jasper Irving, a rising Republican senator who has summoned Janine Roth (Streep), the head journalist at a large news corporation, to sell her on the government's new military strategy. It's his hope that she in turn will sell the public on the idea. Meanwhile, a history professor (Redford) is trying to convince one of his more promising students to strive to make a difference in the world. Professor Malley believes Todd Hayes (Andrew Garfield) to be a bright young man, and he wants to know why Todd has become so apathetic with his schoolwork. The two men banter back and forth about the nature of activism, and Malley tells him about two of his former students, Ernest and Arian (Michael Pena and Derek Luke), both of whom are currently serving in Iraq. Unbeknownst to Malley, at that very moment, Ernest and Arian are engaging in the exact military strategy that Senator Irving is discussing with Roth. Their mission has just gone terribly awry, and the men have fallen into enemy territory. So the senator and journalist argue, the professor and student debate, and all the while the wounded soldiers wait desperately for rescue. These disparate storylines slowly build and converge, culminating in a blaring statement about civic responsibility and social conscience.Cruise and Streep are a delight to watch, and their battle of words gives the most heat to the film. As one might expect, it casts an extremely critical eye at the current state of American politics. However, it veers toward hope, and a call to action. Redford, himself a longtime activist, appears to be sending an open letter to America: turn off the celebrity coverage and get involved.
